"When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus' knees and said 'Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!' " - Luke 5:8.
" Then Jesus said to Simon, 'Don't be afraid; from now on you will catch men.' so they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him." - Luke 5:10b - 11
I was so excited for Stef and Mish (They're engaged) when they finally got the new house they're going to move into as soon as they get married. After hearing all the great things about it, I finally got to be invited to help them move in some of their new stuff and finally saw the new home last wednesday. It was exactly the way they described it.(nice!! good news for me too, since I'm moving in with Stef for a while until they move in together hehehe) It was funny, interesting and overwehlming to see them decorate and plan their lives out in their new house. In the middle of all that, an interesting conversation about which kind of light goes with which kind of room struck me. All of us agreed how great yellow lights were and that it goes to almost all the rooms but white light should go to the washroom. Here are some of the reasons why: Yellow lights provide a nice mood to the room, it enhances skin tone, and also unemphasizes a lot of unwanted things (blemishes). Bottom line, we all look better under a yellow light which is what you want your visitors to feel whenever they're in your home. (unless you really don't want 'em back). While white lights simply reveal everything including the things you don't want to see.
Peter's encounter with Jesus had this white light effect on him, as he got closer to Jesus it revealed to him his very core which is "a sinful man". Similarly, as we get to closer, Jesus can reveal to us things we don't want to see and just like that white light in the washroom, It's purpose is not to shame us but to show us, so we can remove these unwanted things.
So what do we do when we're under this Great White Light?
a.) Fear (do not fear)
" Then Jesus said to Simon, 'Don't be afraid..."
I cringe whenever I look at myself closely in the mirror especially under a white light. (Don't tell me you don't. hehehe right.) and we might feel the same way underneath the light of God but just like Peter we're called not to respond in fear but with full confidence of what Jesus did for us.
b.) Focus (change our focus)
" Then Jesus said to Simon, 'Don't be afraid; from now on you will catch men.'
Peter was really bogged down for doubting and predicting that they won't catch anything but Jesus' reply to him was simply "from now on you will catch men". Short of saying forget about doubting, wrong predictions, and your fishes, from now on we're going to do something better. When we come under God's light, we are called to change our focus from our past to God's purpose.
c.) Folllow through (just do it)
" Then Jesus said to Simon, 'Don't be afraid; from now on you will catch men.' so they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him."
At the end of the day, it's not how many mistakes were exposed or how much we feel bad about them but it's how we follow through. Peter and the disciples' response was to leave everything and follow Jesus. The fact is God's light will reveal to us the real us which is sinful, but we are not called to respond in fear but to change our focus and follow through.
Now I realize why the white light goes to the washroom, it's so I can have a reality check and change for the better every trip. hehehe. ayus!
