" Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed."
Mark 1:35
I've always had the habit of starting my day with the word of God and naturally, as a man of obssessive compulsion (OC-OC), I have put a structure (time limit) to my quiet time because I don't want to neglect my responsibilities that day simply because I was "into the word" so much (if there is such a thing). I felt like spending time with God was never a good alibi for negligence. Although I would change this routine from time to time to avoid familiarity and boredom, prayer in a solitary is one of the steady staples but one of the hardest to follow through because: 1.) I have a short attention span, 2.)I have a tendency to knock off while waiting for God's voice, 3.) I'm still on the process of developing the art of being still. Although these reasons are somewhat valid, Jesus never used them as an excuse but gives us an example of what prayer in a solitary place can do.
Prayer in a solitary place can:
a.) Reveal to us our purpose
" Jesus replied, 'Let us go somewhere else - to the nearby villages - so I can preach there also. That is why I have come.' "
Mark 1:38
Although Peter and the other disciples were concerned about entertaining the guests, Jesus was never distracted because he knew exactly the purpose he was sent here which was revealed to him after his prayer in a solitary place. We can easily avoid distractions in our lives when we know our purpose which can be revealed to us in prayer in solitary places.
b.) Refresh and bring us healing
" John's disciples came and took his body and buried it. Then they went and told Jesus. When Jesus heard about what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place."
Matthew 14:12 - 13
Upon hearing of John's death, Jesus withdrew to a solitary place. After a few moments in solitude, he was back healing the sick and performing miracles. Praying daily in a solitary place can refresh and bring us healing. A few moments in it can bring us back on track.
c.) Bring us strength
" He withdrew about a stone's throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, 'Father if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.' An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him."
Luke 22:41 - 43
Jesus knew what he was going to go through and he also knew that he was going to need supernatural strength to go through it. He found it in after praying in a solitary place called gethsemane. Just like Jesus, we too know that we have our own ordeals that we have to go through and it will require more than our strength, It will require God's strength which we can find while praying in our gethsemanes, our solitary places.
" But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret will reward you."
Matthew 6:6
Hope this helps.
